“You can choose your path.” — Tomás Seré
The line is about agency, but it also fits the small pleasure of standing before a glass case filled with empanadas. At La Rosario in Ronda, the path was a series of compact choices: meat or cheese, familiar or unfamiliar, savoury first and something chocolate-covered at the end.
The counter made that choice visible. Empanadas sat in rows behind glass, their folded edges giving each one a slightly different shape. The selection was broad enough to invite curiosity without turning a quick stop into an ordeal.

The pastry itself was thin, but olive oil came through strongly. That character gave the empanadas a definite point of view; it may also divide diners who prefer a more neutral crust. In the beef empanada, pepper dominated the filling. It was direct and savoury, though the seasoning and olive-oil presence left little room for subtlety.
The cheeseburger empanada took the more familiar route. Cheddar led the filling, translating the idea of a cheeseburger into a hand-held pastry. It was easy to understand and likely the safer choice for someone approaching Argentine empanadas for the first time.
Then the route changed completely with the alfajor. The dark-chocolate-covered version was the most memorable bite: rich, dense and almost truffle-like. After the savoury empanadas, it felt less like an afterthought than a destination of its own. This was the item that turned a convenient stop into something worth remembering.

What to order
- The dark-chocolate-covered alfajor—the strongest and most memorable item.
- The cheeseburger empanada for a familiar, cheddar-forward filling.
- The beef empanada if you enjoy pepper-led fillings and pronounced olive oil.
What to skip
No absolute skip. Choose cautiously if you dislike olive-oil-forward pastry; the flavour was pronounced during this visit.
Practical notes
A photographed price board listed empanada prices from €3.50 each during this visit. Prices may change.
Verdict
La Rosario is worth a Ronda stop for variety and convenience, but the chocolate alfajor was the real destination. The cheeseburger empanada was the safer route and the beef the bolder one.
